Cookies Policy
Last updated: 11 October 2026
This Cookies Policy explains what cookies Vigil uses and why. We keep this deliberately short, because we keep our cookie usage deliberately minimal.
1. What are cookies
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. They can be used to remember information about your visit, such as whether you're logged in.
2. The cookies we use
Vigil uses one cookie, and a second only if you ask for it:
- Session cookie (
rt): a strictly necessary, httpOnlycookie that keeps you signed in between visits. It cannot be read by JavaScript or third-party scripts, is sent only to our own API, and expires automatically after 30 days or when you log out. - Language cookie (
vigil_locale): set only if you choose a language. It holds the code of that language (for examplede) and nothing else, and lasts one year, so that the first thing you see is already in the language you picked. The page sets it when you choose, so unlike the session cookie it is readable by our own scripts.
The session cookie is essential for the Service to function (without it, you would need to log in on every page load). The language cookie is a preference you set yourself. Neither is used for advertising, analytics, or tracking across other websites.
3. Third-party cookies
We do not use third-party advertising, analytics, or social-media tracking cookies. If this changes in the future, we will update this policy and, where required by law, ask for your consent first.
4. Managing cookies
Blocking the session cookie will prevent you from staying signed in to Vigil. Blocking the language cookie only means a page opens in English until your account has loaded. You can control or delete cookies at any time through your browser's settings.
5. Changes to this policy
If we introduce new cookies, we will update this page and, where required, provide a consent mechanism before they are set.
