How Vigil reads pages
- It reads pages anyone can open in a browser, and nothing behind a login.
- It identifies itself in every request.
- It follows each site’s robots.txt, including Crawl-delay.
- It starts with one request at a time per shop and goes faster only while the shop answers normally. A refusal sends it back to one at a time.
- It tries a plain request first and opens a browser only when a page needs one.
What Vigil will not do
- Work around bot protection. When a shop blocks automated access, the page is marked as failed and you are told why.
- Disguise itself as a person’s browser.
- Ask again when a shop answers that it is getting too many requests.
Where data is kept
The application and its database run on Railway, in the EU (Netherlands). Payments are handled by Polar and email is sent through Resend, both in the USA. On the plans that include AI reading, the visible text of a public shop page is sent to Anthropic, also in the USA, to find its products; no account data goes with it.
Every provider, what it receives and where it is located is on the Subprocessors page.
